Product Description
Quiet Walk underlayment is the hallmark product of MP Global Products. Our revolutionary "Quiet Walk" laminate floor underlayment smoothes out little sub floor imperfections while quieting impact sound and floor to ceiling noise. Not only does it dampen ambient sound in the room it's installed in, but it also inhibits sound from traveling into the room below. Although it is promoted as an upgrade underlayment taking the place of poly foam, it doesn't carry a heavy upgrade price when compared to cork or rubber. On the other hand, in recent head-to-head Sound Transmission Loss tests, Quiet Walk outperformed both cork and rubber in the majority of test band frequencies. Certified field sound tests were performed on an installation over a standard concrete sub floor, and received an FIIC score of "60". In addition to its sound deadening benefits, the absorbing action of the synthetic fibers together with the attached vapor barrier provides superior moisture protection that is backed by a Limited Lifetime warranty. Another benefit is the increase in R-value to help keep floors warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. Quiet Walk is available in 100 square foot do-it-yourself size rolls

Summary: QuietWalk Underlayment 2010-07-21
Comment: QuietWalk is easy to work with and lays down nicely. It is a nice product. The moisure barrier gets damaged easily if a hammer hits it or the nailer rubs against it so I had to keep patching the barrier with tape to reseal it.

Comment: I personally did not experience any soundproofing qualities advertised. I installed this under high quality laminate and over 1/2 inch hardiebacker above plywood subfloor with Green Glue between plywood and cement board. Impact insulation was no better than hardwood over plywood that I have in the living room.

Comment: While I am not an expert in the field of "underlayment" I can offer my observations from the product:
I found it to be very consistent with regards to thickness and the overlapping adhesive was very convenient. Its light - so I anticipate that it would not be as good as a mass loaded vinyl type product in regards to certain frequencies. For my specific use I intended, and did, nail down the floor with 2 1/2" cleats. This clearly undermines the "quiet" performance as noise will propagate through the nails. However, I did some casual testing and found that a lot of the "clack" is dampened which was what I was going for. It did NOT in anyway make the floor sound like pergo or some snap-together engineered product (I installed solid hardwood).
Product was very easy to work with. However, the vapor barrier is very, very delicate and will tear easily so be careful during insulation.
I intend to buy more as I continue to re-floor the rest of the house. While I have never personally tried other brands or types of product, I found no compelling reasons to do so.

Comment: I researched under layment for basement laminate application online after a disappointing selection at the big box stores. If your putting down laminate and need an under layment - buy this product! The durability and quality was evident on the 1st roll. It's difficult to cut through with a blade knife - so you may want to use scissors. Sound deadening and feel underfoot is great. If you want to save a few bucks and get a superior product, buy your laminate at your local store but order this under layment online.

Comment: after purchasing laminate flooring I read about the hollow, tapping sound the floor will make. after much research this product was a good deal with free shipping. the floor sounds like a real floor. it seems to deaden the sound from floor to ceiling pretty good. my mother lives in a inlaw below and says it didn't quitr the footsteps above as we had hoped. good product, comes with tape, didn't say that in description but glad it did. went down easy. would recommend and use again.
